We're selling 30" of SEX[/b}
What do you get when you put a black crossdresser in a middle class English Factory suburb? A recipe for disaster or so you would probably think.
Plot Synopsis
Charlie's just inherited the family's small time shoe making factory that prides itself on producing quality men's shoes. Unfortunately in this day and age of chinese imports the company is facing difficulties. Charlie is faced with either laying off the staff or adopting a new strategy.
Things meet up when he comes to the aide of Lola, a drag queen in Soho and they combine efforts to design a line of sexy shoes and boots suitable for a niche market of male wearers.
-b=Personal View
Much in the vein of Priscilla this movie had great potential to explore the biases and conflicts created by placing a black drag queen in a middle class white suburb. But unfortunately decides not to spend too much time on such issues but prefers to centre around the comedy aspect a bit more.
With the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras this film might be worth a look. Eijofor (as Lola) clearly enjoys himself in the role and seems to hold the whole movie together (The other performances are average). Some of the moments with Lola's interaction with the staff of the factory and his landlady are memorable (His landlady asks him "Are you a guy"and Lola is a bit taken aback and not sure what to say).
This is a pretty decent movie that's based around a true story (although the Kinky Boots factory is now closed).
My Rating : 3/5 (Good light hearted movie but nothing fabulous or of Priscilla standard)
Main Cast
Joel Edgerton
Chewitel Eijofor
Rating : M
Released : 2005
Genre : Comedy
Price : $19.95 (at
