High Definition on a Budget
March 2nd 2008 07:17
I spoke yesterday to some extent about the possibilities of High Definition content for the budget oriented movie lover. About how the loss of HD DVD as a format might provide us with a cheap alternative until Blu Ray reduces in price.
After doing a bit of searching on Ebay Australia it would seem that such a thing might actually be realistic. With people desperately trying to offload stock of HD DVD players and HD DVD movies. Combined with a pretty decent release list of movies it should be able to satisfy your need for High Definition content without putting big dents in your wallet.
Currently there are 22 players listed on Ebay averaging in price from about $130 - $400 (new) Some coming with movies and including the EP-10 and E1 players from Toshiba (EP10 seems quite popular). There are also over 700 movies listed with prices ranging from $3.95 - $50 (for box sets).
EzyDVD also seems to be listing over 700 unique HD DVD's for sale at relatively reasonable prices starting at $9.95,

Just been looking through some advertising and Harvey Norman's are selling their only HD DVD player (a Toshiba) for $295 which brings it into the same range as the average DVD Recorder. I'm sure that if you asked for competitive prices you could probably get them down to $250.
Of course that odesn't quite compare in terms of budget with their cheapest DVD player that comes in for $39......
