Does Back To The Future stand up time?

I am a self-described Backie. I have all the movies on video and DVD (in case one format wears out), I have a cache of movie script drafts and I scoured Ebay for the books and other merchandise. I even have my Solar Shades, acquired from Pizza Hut back in 1989.
However, has the trilogy weathered the true test of time? Nearly twenty-five years after the release of the first movie, it is easy to see that the core concept of the movie has survived. The trilogy is still an engaging story and one that is definitely still worth multiple viewings, because half the fun is finding all the in-jokes that the movies provide. A true test of fandom is seeing how many you know. That is, if you're old enough to get some of the references. I mean, how many of today's kids know that Huey Lewis made a cameo appearance at the band tryouts in Part 1? (Huey Lewis? Who's that?)
And this is where Part 1 and the rest of the trilogy are truly stuck in 1985. Hey, I loved the 80s, don't get me wrong, and I love these movies. But, it's a bit of a sting to watch them now and truly feel my years when I see those outfits (OMG, the denim jacket!), the popular products (Yes, I do remember when Pepsi came in that style of can) and the garish lifestyle of the period (Biff's pad in Part 2). I cringe when I think about the inevitable day when I'll be explaining these things to my soon-to-be stepdaughter who regards the 80s as ancient history. Oh, and let's not forget the DeLorean. While the movies are forever tied to that car, it is particularly scarce now (Thank John DeLorean for that.)
At least the story is timeless and that makes it a bit easier to swallow that old feeling when I watch the movies. I mean, the miscellaneous stuff isn't going to be any less dated after the next twenty-five years. Perhaps it's time sit down and watch the movies again, back-to-back-to-back and point and laugh at all the in-jokes.
Let's go back to 1985!
